Shiny Pokémon (色違いポケモン) are very special color variations of normal Pokémon, named by English fans "shiny" because of the signature sparkle animation that occurs when encountered. They are highly sought because they are so rare to get. In fact there is is only a one in 8192 (0.0122%) chance of encountering one in the wild. And on rare occasions, Shiny Pokémon have gotten merchandise as well. The first Shiny Pokémon to get merchandise was Shiny Noctowl, thanks to Ash catching one in the anime. Merchandise of Shiny Pokémon has since been few and far between, the only other notable release being of special prize Shiny Pokémon Kids.
However, there have been two separate Pokémon Center promotions featuring Shiny Pokémon; the first featuring Shiny Magikarp and Shiny Gyarados during the HeartGold and SoulSilver hype, and the second featuring Shiny Raikou, Shiny Entei, and Shiny Suicune from the 13th Pokémon movie, Ruler of Illusion: Zoroark.
